Berry is one of the leading companies in the UK plastic recycling industry, with business throughout Europe and a number of world-leading recycling technologies. CleanStream™ is Berry's patented technology and the world's first closed-loop recycling technology that can process polypropylene (PP) waste into food-grade packaging. It has now obtained a letter of no objection from the FDA, confirming that the r-PP produced by CleanStream™ technology can reach the application level of 100% recycled food packaging.
Earlier this year, Berry established a factory using CleanStream™ technology in the small town of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK, and designated TOMRA as its technical partner, using TOMRA's intelligent sorting equipment to sort waste.
The factory has installed 5 AUTOSORT™ and 1 INNOSORT™ FLAKE, which can process 48,000 tons of PP waste every year. The refined raw materials will be used to produce other packaging of Berry Group, such as food packaging, cosmetic packaging and other contact-sensitive applications. The 5 AUTOSORT™ devices in the factory are used for pre-treatment of PP waste. The AUTOSORT™ sorting machine is equipped with TOMRA's unique FLYING BEAM™ technology. Its excellent dot matrix scanning makes the detection light source evenly distributed on the conveyor belt, which maximizes the purity and efficiency of sorting. The pre-treated PP will be cleaned and crushed, and then separated and purified by INNOSORT™ FLAKE. The unique technology of INNOSORT™ FLAKE is that it uses TOMRA's mature near-infrared (NIR) detection technology and flying light scanning technology, which can remove various impurities in the sheet according to color and material, and the sorting and processing capacity can reach 6 tons per hour, achieving dual guarantees of product purity and output.
The market's attention to recycled materials is increasing day by day, and the growth in demand is driving market investment and technological innovation. The successful operation of r-PP at the Berry plant is an important step towards a circular economy. In the future, Berry will expand its investment and work with TOMRA to jointly promote continuous changes in the industry.
