Is label-free becoming the trend?

Source:     Time: 2022-03-28

PepsiCo plans to launch the first "label-free" Pepsi-Cola in China in April. It is said that this is the first time that PepsiCo has launched a label-free product in the Chinese market. After Master Kong Beverage, PepsiCo has become the second company to launch a label-free bottle in the Chinese market, and will also become one of the first companies to launch a bottle-free beverage product in the Chinese market.

        China's first "label-free" cola

Pepsi-Cola has boldly changed this time, removing the plastic label and ink printing on the bottle and bottle cap respectively, but retaining the classic patented bottle design as a whole. The classic blue bottle cap, transparent bottle, and cola bubbles are all clearly visible. As for the Pepsi-Cola trademark on the bottle, it is presented in relief, and information such as the product name and shelf life are printed using laser technology.

The packaging without labels also eliminates the use of adhesives and inks, avoiding the mixing of label films into bottle pieces during recycling, which reduces the recycling quality. At the same time, this measure also reduces the use of plastics.

Following the launch of unlabeled lime-flavored sugar-free cola in the Korean market in October last year, Pepsi-Cola is about to launch unlabeled original cola in the Chinese market. In this regard, PepsiCo revealed that the launch of unlabeled packaging is a major move for the company to explore low-carbon environmental protection and pursue a recycling system. Promoting environmental protection with no labels is also another new attempt by the company to implement carbon reduction and environmental protection goals at the product level, and thereby increase the recycling rate of plastics and reduce carbon footprint.

Master Kong's first label-free beverage in China

On March 3 this year, Master Kong made a big move: the label-free products - iced black tea and Master Kong sugar-free iced black tea were officially launched, and a label-free product launch conference was held in Shanghai. This time, the main focus was on the label-free PET bottle packaging with a low-carbon concept. Public information shows that this is the first time that a company in China has launched a label-free beverage product. Master Kong's first label-free product was launched, and it chose its most core billion-level product, Master Kong Black Tea, to test the waters and adopt the method of selling in boxes. The bottle body is laser printed with the product name, shelf life and the reminder of "not selling in single bottles" respectively.

On the one hand, label-free PET bottles remove the label paper on the packaging, which not only reduces the amount of plastic used in the production process, but also reduces the workload of classification in the recycling process, and is in line with the brand's low-carbon and environmentally friendly concept. The relevant person in charge of the Master Kong Beverage Division said: The first launch of this low-carbon concept product is not only to respond to the country's carbon reduction requirements, but also to conform to the new concept of healthy and environmentally friendly consumption of the new generation. It is hoped that Master Kong's small step today will lead more partner companies to take a big step towards low-carbon and environmentally friendly packaging, and work with consumers to create a new fashion of green consumption. He also admitted that it may take a long time for label-free beverages to be popularized and educated before they can be accepted by the market, but "in the long run, this is the right thing to do. Even if we have to go a long way, we are willing to be the first to try."

Can label-free become a general trend?

Only three months have passed this year, and Pepsi and local brand Master Kong have launched label-free bottles in the Chinese market. Will label-free beverage bottles become a product that other companies are competing to launch in China? Can this packaging form become a general trend?

First of all, whether it is Pepsi or Master Kong, the launch of label-free classic products has occupied an unshakable position in the beverage market for many years. Even if the label, which is the face value of the bottle and the brand, is torn off, it is difficult to prevent consumers from knowing the brand of the product just by looking at the bottle and the contents. For beverage brand companies, tearing off the label will not have a great impact on consumers' brand recognition.

Secondly, from the perspective of sustainability, label-free packaging has indeed become a popular form in the foreign packaging market in recent years. This is also a big step for China to move towards low-carbon and environmentally friendly packaging. I believe that more such products will appear in the future.
