DSM supports Bogebu's first bio-based stroller to help reduce carbon emissions

Dutch stroller brand Bugaboo recently launched a portfolio of Bugaboo strollers made of bio-based materials through cross-value chain cooperation with DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant and Neste.

It is reported that most of the plastic parts of this series of strollers are made of DSM Engineering Materials' Akulon® 100% bio-based B-MB polyamide 6, and this "polyamide 6" is made of bio-based raw materials from Fibrant and Neste. DSM Engineering Materials uses renewable waste and residual raw materials and adopts a mass balance method to reduce the carbon footprint of this "polyamide 6" by about 75% compared with traditional ones, accounting for 24% of the carbon emission reduction of the entire stroller.

        Achieving Carbon Zero

In early 2022, Bugaboo announced its goal to achieve carbon zero by 2035. As most of Bugaboo’s climate impact comes from its scope 3 emissions (value chain related emissions), the transition to low fossil carbon materials will be key to supporting the company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy. This is exactly in line with the development vision of the partners in this cooperation: DSM Engineering Materials continues to focus on a complete alternative portfolio of bio-based and circular solutions as part of the SimplyCircular™ program to develop a fossil-free economy; Fubont is committed to making the entire value chain more sustainable; Neste is committed to providing the raw materials for Neste RE™ polymers and chemicals.

Traditional Akulon® polyamide 6 is already very good at reducing carbon footprint, and switching to Akulon® 100% bio-based B-MB polyamide 6 can not only significantly reduce the carbon footprint compared to traditional polyamide 6, but also help to further reduce fossil costs in the value chain. This new material for the entire stroller was developed by DSM Engineering Materials in collaboration with its partners Fubont and Neste. Among them, Neste provides renewable Neste RE™, a polymer raw material made from 100% bio-based materials extracted from waste and residues, to replace fossil raw materials in the value chain. DSM Engineering Materials, Fubond and Neste are all ISCC-PLUS certified.

Carbon emissions reduction can reach up to 24%

This mass-balanced bio-based Akulon® polyamide 6 has the same mechanical properties and characteristics as traditional Akulon® grades, meeting the quality and durability required by Bugaboo's strict safety standards. On this basis, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 24% per stroller, in line with Bugaboo's high ESG goals. This allows Bugaboo to use bio-based Akulon® polyamide 6 as a direct replacement for traditional materials. The first Bugaboo strollers made of bio-based materials are expected to be gradually available online and in stores worldwide. By 2023, the entire Bugaboo stroller product range will be produced with bio-based materials.

Adriaan Thiery, CEO of Bugaboo, said that solving the climate crisis and dealing with its consequences is urgent and requires companies to take responsibility now. However, companies cannot achieve a circular economy alone. By collaborating along the value chain, we can benefit from innovative low-carbon emission reduction solutions such as bio-based polyamide 6. These solutions effectively promote Bugaboo's ESG goals, implement the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement, and move the business towards a low-carbon circular economy.

"Seeing Bugaboo become one of the earliest pioneers in the use of bio-based polyamide 6, DSM is very proud to work with Fubont and Neste to produce this innovative material. As we all know, we need a sustainable economy and we are working hard to achieve this goal. In this process, cooperation is key. Sustainable circular solutions such as bio-based polyamide 6 can effectively help our partners achieve their environmental goals and have a large-scale positive impact. DSM can use Bugaboo as an example to empower more partners and play a leading role in driving society towards a more sustainable path." said Roeland Polet, President of DSM Engineering Materials.
