Michelin launches two new tires made from sustainable materials

Recently, Michelin launched two tires containing 45% and 58% sustainable materials, which will be suitable for passenger cars and buses. Both new tires have been approved for road use, laying the foundation for the launch of high-content sustainable material tires in the next two to three years.

This breakthrough is due to the use of more natural rubber, recycled carbon black, sunflower oil and bio-resin, silica extracted from rice husks, and recycled steel. It is reported that Michelin plans to increase the proportion of sustainable materials in tires to 40% by 2030, and to achieve 100% tires made of bio-sourced, renewable or recyclable materials by 2050.

As of the end of 2021, Michelin holds 3,678 valid patents in the field of high-tech materials. At the same time, it has a series of targeted cooperation projects, including Pyrowave (recycled styrene), Carbios (recycled PET plastics), Enviro (recycled carbon black), IFPEN/Axens (biobutadiene) with the participation of ADEME (French Ecological Transition Agency), Empreinte project in cooperation with ADEME, carbon black recycling project (BlackCycle) to help establish a circular economy, and plastic recycling project (Whitecycle), which converts waste tires into high-quality raw materials that can be used to make new tires.
