COP28 kicks off: Renewable energy development becomes the focus

Source:     Time: 2023-12-05

The 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) will be held in Dubai, UAE from November 30 to December 12, 2023. COP28 is a critical moment to promote global climate action, and the development of renewable energy has become a focus.

50 global oil and gas companies sign decarbonization commitment

The United Arab Emirates, the presidency of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Saudi Arabia announced on November 2 during the conference that 50 global oil and gas companies have joined the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter, which aims to accelerate climate action in the oil and gas industry. The oil and gas companies that signed the charter account for more than 40% of global oil production, of which national oil companies (oil companies controlled by national governments) account for more than 60% of the signatories. This is also the largest number of national oil companies that have ever committed to implementing decarbonization initiatives.

The charter requires the oil and gas industry to achieve net zero emissions and zero methane emissions by 2050 or earlier, eliminate routine flaring by 2030, and continue to work towards industry best practices in emissions reduction.

Nearly 120 countries signed the Global Commitment on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

On December 2, nearly 120 countries, including China and the United States, signed the Global Commitment on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, which aims to triple global renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030. Agence France-Presse pointed out that this commitment undoubtedly sends a signal to all walks of life that "the world is accelerating green transformation."

This commitment is essential for the massive increase in the use of wind, solar and other renewable energy, and for the global goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

At this conference, energy issues such as developing emission reduction plans, reducing the production of fossil fuels such as oil and coal, and increasing the use of renewable energy were the focus of discussion. All parties also look forward to achieving more consensus and results at COP28, and taking joint action to address the risks of global climate change, promote global energy transformation and ensure energy security.
