Renault's Re-FACTORY in Flins, France, is Europe's first circular economy factory dedicated to mobility. It is an innovative industrial and commercial circular economy ecosystem established by Renault Group in Flins, with the goal of achieving a negative carbon dioxide balance by 2030.
The Re-FACTORY project was launched in 2021. Made up of multi-sector partners (start-ups, academic partners, mainstream groups, local authorities, etc.), the centres structure their activities around four core areas: Re-trofit, Re-energy, Re-cycle and Re-start. These activity centres apply their expertise to the main components of the circular economy (supply chain, eco-design, functional economy, repair, reuse, re-production and recycling), thus supporting the entire life cycle of vehicles.
Re-trofit: Extend vehicle service life
Re-energy: Production, storage and management of renewable energy
Re-cycle: Optimize resource management
Re-start: Training and innovation in the circular economy
In July 2023, the European Commission proposed a new regulation proposal on end-of-life vehicles (ELV), the goal of which is to prevent and limit waste generated by end-of-life vehicles and their components, and improve the environmental performance of all economic operators involved in the life cycle of vehicles. The new regulation requires that at least 25% of the plastics used in new cars come from recycled materials, of which 25% must come from recycled materials from end-of-life vehicles.
The Re-FACTORY integrates the work of the Choisy-le-Roi plant, promotes the supply of parts and materials in short cycles, installs a production line for dismantling scrapped vehicles, and expands the remanufacturing, reuse and recycling of materials. Renault Group aims to use 33% of recycled materials in its new cars by 2030.
Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault, said: "With the circular economy factory, Forlan will become a benchmark for the circular economy in Europe. This circular economy factory will enable the Group to meet the tough challenges facing the mobility and automotive industry players today and in the future. The factory aims to achieve a negative CO2 balance by 2030, combining circular economy, emission reduction, skills development and new value creation activities, which is fully in line with the Group's global strategy."
