On August 17, Lenovo officially held an innovation open day with the theme of "Opening New Imagination" at its global headquarters in Beijing. In addition to showcasing more than 180 technological innovations, Lenovo also demonstrated the specific applications and practices of its green and environmentally friendly design innovations.
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics are currently more common in the market. The proportion of recycled plastics used in the processing process is generally 30% to 50%, and most of the rest are newly produced plastics and additives. If you want to further increase the proportion of recycled plastics, the performance of the material will deteriorate.
In order to better help environmental protection, Lenovo has set its sights on increasing the proportion of plastic recycling. Starting in 2017, Lenovo and Sony spent three and a half years developing, conducting 250 sets of formula experiments, nearly 40 formula verifications, and 12 batch tests. Finally, SORPLAS™ environmentally friendly materials, which make up more than 95% of the raw materials of recycled plastics (PCR), were applied to Lenovo's products. At the beginning of 2021, the ThinkPad 45W/65W power adapter using 95% recycled materials has been successfully mass-produced, covering about 85% of ThinkPad products, and was subsequently introduced to speakers and notebook structural parts.
The Lenovo team is determined to continue exploring the possibility of using high-proportion recycled materials in ThinkPad batteries and boldly challenge higher challenges! After dozens of formula adjustments, more than a hundred test verifications, and adjustments to the molding process, while meeting extremely high requirements, it also solved problems such as short shots, trapped air, and incomplete filling, successfully opening a new era of 97% recycled batteries. In April 2022, Lenovo successfully mass-produced the industry's first 97% PCC battery on ThinkPad, further driving the notebook industry to accelerate the application of high-recycled plastics. Compared with the 25% to 30% PCC batteries commonly used in the industry, this environmentally friendly and cutting-edge PCC 97% battery has made a significant contribution to Lenovo's ESG strategy - applied in 10 ThinkPad products, it can reduce 80 tons of virgin plastic use and 171 tons of CO₂ emissions in one year.
It is understood that Lenovo will continue to promote the wider application of high-proportion PCR materials in the keycaps, high-power power adapters and shells of ThinkPad products in the next few years.
