Mentor, Ohio-based Avery Dennison Label & Packaging Materials said it has removed a key barrier to plastic recycling with the introduction of next-generation AD CleanFlake technology, extending the benefits of its CleanFlake technology to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles. With the AD CleanFlake portfolio, Avery Dennison said it can enable rigid plastic recycling across its film portfolio, providing brands and converters with solutions that support the recycling process without compromising performance to achieve sustainability goals.

AD CleanFlake technology, which has been endorsed by the Association of Plastic Recyclers, the European PET Bottle Platform and Recyclass, enables recycling by working with rigid plastic recycling streams, cleanly removing in the case of polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, or leaving it in the packaging in the case of high-density polyethylene, or HDPE. The AD CleanFlake portfolio creates the potential to divert more than 200 billion rigid plastic bottles and containers from landfills.

“This is an important step in advancing a circular packaging economy using innovation without compromising performance,” said Pascale Wautelet, vice president of global research and development for Avery Dennison Label and Graphic Materials. “Brands are actively seeking solutions to help them advance their sustainability initiatives, and our AD CleanFlake portfolio significantly expands the applications of this groundbreaking technology.”

According to the company, AD CleanFlake technology also delivers adhesion, clarity and converting performance. For converters, the adhesive offers resistance to water whitening and bleed. Brands benefit from print quality that supports bold designs and helps improve shelf appeal. AD CleanFlake will be available in Europe in September and in North America by the end of the year.
