Freepoint Advanced Recycling Facility Receives ISCC Plus Certification

Source:     Time: 2022-04-26

Houston-based Freepoint Eco-Systems LLC has received the ISCC Plus certification from global environmental organization International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) for its advanced recycling facility in Hebron, Ohio.

Freepoint is developing a facility in Ohio that will use pyrolysis to convert plastic waste into feedstock for high-quality plastic resins. The facility will recycle approximately 90,000 tons of end-of-life plastics per year that would otherwise go to landfill or incineration. The facility was announced in 2021 and is expected to open in 2023. The company said it hopes the facility will have an environmental impact by reducing the consumption of primary resins from crude oil-derived feedstocks, thereby keeping carbon in the ground, enabling a more circular and sustainable economy and a healthier planet.

ISCC is an international certification body for companies committed to sustainable solutions for fully traceable supply chains and circular economies. Obtaining ISCC certification represents a significant commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. ISCC addresses sustainability requirements for a wide range of feedstocks and markets.

Freepoint said that obtaining this certification was a five-step process completed in collaboration with an impartial third-party auditor. "Freepoint is committed to being part of the solution to the growing environmental issue of plastic waste, and we are pleased that our Ohio facility has received certification from ISCC," said Jeff McMahon, CEO of Freepoint Eco-Systems.

The company said it aims to continue expanding its advanced recycling footprint in the U.S., Europe and Asia as demand for recycled content in plastics continues to grow.
