Berry Global has launched a range of reusable polypropylene cutlery in response to demand for more sustainable packaging solutions in the food service industry.
The move comes in response to government legislation and growing demand for sustainable packaging across the industry. For example, France’s Anti-Waste Circular Economy Law (AGEC) requires restaurants and other venues with more than 20 seats to provide reusable cutlery.
“We are committed to accelerating the transition to a truly circular economy by designing and developing innovative, reusable plastic products like this game-changing line of reusable cutlery that helps our customers meet the growing sustainability demands of today and tomorrow,” said Joseph Bjork, Vice President of Berry’s Super Food Services. “Our new line of reusable cutlery will help reduce waste and lower the use of virgin resources while providing functionality, durability and regulatory compliance.”
Reusable Polypropylene Cutlery: Safe and Durable
The bowl is made of high-quality polypropylene (PP) material, which is safe for food contact and easily recyclable. Its sturdy structure is dishwasher-safe for durability and easy cleaning and meets high hygiene standards. The outside of the bowl has a matte surface structure that resists scratches, while the smooth and hygienic inside minimizes the risk of bacterial growth.
In addition, the transparent lid can display all types of food, from meals and fresh salads to delicious snacks and desserts. Both the bowl and the lid can use in-mold labeling technology for branding.
The bowls and lids also support efficient transportation, storage and convenient on-site operation. Their internal stacking structure and easy-to-operate design allow waiters to serve multiple portions of food at the same time. In addition, the bowls and lids can be used interchangeably, and the lids can also be used as plates, providing maximum flexibility.
Traceable cutlery helps recycling
The new reusable polypropylene cutlery range is part of a recycling program that allows customers to take leftover food or takeaway home and then bring the bowls and lids back to recycling. After disinfection, they are put back into circulation. To help with inventory management and tracking reuse, each bowl has space for a QR code, barcode, Digimarc or RFID chip with a unique code. Each lid can also be embedded with an RFID chip.
Joseph Bjork concluded: "The intelligent design of our reusable cutlery range redefines the way restaurant food is served, enjoyed and packaged, providing practical and efficient options for those in the food service industry that meet all their needs."
