The theme of World Oceans Day and National Ocean Publicity Day in 2022 is "Protecting the Marine Ecosystem and Harmonious Coexistence between Man and Nature", and this theme will be used during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, aiming to call on people to enhance their awareness of marine protection and say no to all kinds of behaviors that pollute the ocean.
The international community works together to solve marine pollution
From February 28 to March 2, 2022, the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA5.2) was held, and the meeting paid great attention to issues such as marine plastic pollution and biodiversity protection. At the meeting, Thomson, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Ocean Affairs, said that the amount of plastic in the ocean is incalculable, posing a serious threat to the marine ecosystem, and no country can be immune from marine pollution. Everyone has the responsibility to protect the ocean, and the international community should "develop solutions and open a new chapter in global ocean action."
Data from the United Nations Environment Programme show that plastic production and pollution are gradually becoming a problem that needs to be addressed. For example, more than 800 marine and coastal species are affected by plastic pollution due to ingestion, entanglement and other dangers, and about 11 million tons of plastic waste flows into the ocean every year. By 2040, this number may triple.
Develop a legally binding international instrument
UNEA5.2 adopted Resolution 5/14 "Ending Plastic Pollution: Developing a Legally Binding International Instrument", which was approved by heads of state, environment ministers and other representatives from 175 countries. This instrument reflects the treatment of the entire life cycle of plastics, involving the design of reusable and recyclable products and materials, and the need to strengthen international cooperation to promote access to technology, capacity building and scientific and technical cooperation.
Anderson also stressed that although the committee will start work in 2022 and the negotiation time will be two years, the intergovernmental negotiating committee has not granted any stakeholders a two-year moratorium before 2024.
Requirements for Traceability Evaluation of Marine Plastic Recycling
CPRRA simultaneously launched the "Requirements for Traceability Evaluation of Marine Plastic Recycling", which is committed to standardizing the authenticity and credibility of marine plastic recycling and regeneration, and realizing the traceability management of the entire process of marine plastic recycling and regeneration.
The United Nations designated June 8 of each year as "World Oceans Day" at the 63rd United Nations General Assembly. In his speech on this, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pointed out that human activities are making the ocean world pay a terrible price, and individuals and groups have an obligation to protect the marine environment and manage marine resources carefully. The establishment of "World Oceans Day" has built a platform for the international community to respond to marine challenges, and also provided a new opportunity to further promote the importance of the ocean and raise public awareness of the ocean in China.
